Smith & Nephew

lunes, 4 enero 2010

“Hull has a really strong reputation for innovation and there was a huge opportunity to advance developments further by expanding into the fastest growing segment of the wound care market.” Roger Teasdale, President of Advanced Wound Management Division, Smith & Nephew.

Smith & Nephew Negative Pressure Wound Care Therapy represents the fastest growing segment of the wound care market and Smith & Nephew’s recent investment in this hi-tech area has enabled its Advanced Wound Management division to outperform the market.

The company’s Advanced Wound Management operation, which employs over 1,000 people in Hull, has developed a vacuum device that can be applied to the wound via a tube that goes under the dressing. The negative pressure (suction) helps clean the wound, manage the exudate and hence allow it to heal. The device can be used to treat chronic wounds such as diabetic ulcers, pressure sores, and post-operative wounds. Its use can reduce the amount of nursing care required as well as promoting wound healing by removing fluid, wound exudate and infectious materials.

Smith & Nephew started in Hull over 150 years ago and still has a site in the city – the company’s global headquarters for Advanced Wound Management – and maintains its position as one of the leading companies in the world through continued innovation.
