HSR 'would benefit Yorkshire best''

A national high-speed network will benefit Yorkshire the most, a new study has said.
The new high speed rail (HSR) could create up to 42,000 jobs, boost economic performance and increase yearly economic production by between £17 billion and £29 billion by 2040, the report commissioned by Greengauge 21 said. HSR could also help increase annual tax receipts by between £6 billion and £10 billion by 2040, the report added.
Greenguage 21 was established to begin discussion on HSR in Britain and the report was prepared by management consultancy company KPMG.
North of the country will receive the maximum benefits out of the scheme, with Yorkshire and Humber, Scotland, north east and north west England, and the East and West Midlands reaping the most. The north-south divide could be bridged with this, the report said. It added: "HSR therefore delivers a good return to the Treasury and taxpayer and is a cost-effective approach to securing future national prosperity."
Greengauge 21 director Jim Steer said: "Our new analysis demonstrates that in the long term the Treasury will be winners too, through substantial additional tax revenues."
