HSR to benefit Yorkshire commuters

viernes, 12 marzo 2010

Commuters in Yorkshire, particularly between Leeds and Sheffield, will benefit from Government's plans for a £30 billion high-speed rail (HSR) network as it reduces journey times.

On completion of the project, commuting time between Leeds and Sheffield, as well as London and Manchester, will be reduced from around two hours 10 minutes to 75 minutes, while travelling from London to Glasgow and Edinburgh would take just three and a half hours.

However, the HSR plans announced by transport secretary Lord Adonis requires public funding and consultation, mainly because 440 homes on the line are under threat of demolition.

It is estimated that the first stage of the project, a HSR network from London to Birmingham, will not be finished before 2026.

The construction work of the HSR line to Sheffield and Leeds will only begin after the completion of first stage.

The network running from Euston in London to Birmingham would have two additional forks on either side of the Pennines forming a Y-shaped route.

The line on the east-side passes through the East Midlands and goes to Sheffield and Leeds, while one on the west-sided would go to Manchester.

These forks would then connect with existing lines to Newcastle, Glasgow and Edinburgh.
