Leeds University invests in healthier lifestyles

A Centre of Excellence in Medical Engineering is set to be opened at the University of Leeds to help people stay healthier in old age.
It will cost £11 million and is to be partly-funded by the Wellcome Trust and the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council.
The facility will focus on the degeneration of cardiovascular systems and joints and will bring together experts from across the University and the Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust to create improved therapies.
"We are looking how to help the skeleton, muscles and cardiovascular system support our bodies as we get older, through improved prosthetic implants and technologies to help our tissues regenerate," stated John Fisher, Professor of Mechanical Engineering.
It is hoped that the research will allow problems to be diagnosed in their early stages in order for timely interventions to be delivered.
The University of Leeds recently joined forces with its counterparts in Bristol to develop a model of how errors are corrected while proteins are being built.
