A £25 million Yorkshire and Humber biofuels research centre has been hailed by business minister Lord Mandelson as helping to grow the UK economy.
Kingston Research at Hull, a joint venture between oil and energy giant BP and sustainable science company DuPont, will also enhance the UK's reputation for innovation and research.
The site already accommodates Vivergo Fuels, a joint venture between BP, British Sugar and DuPont, which is scheduled to begin producing bioethanol in 2010.
Lord Mandelson said: "New industries such as low-carbon and renewable technologies have huge potential for driving growth. This is precisely the type of investment project we need attract in order for these industries to thrive in the UK.
"I'm delighted that Hull and East Riding are at the cutting edge of research and development to realise that greener, brighter future."
Tom Riordan, chief executive of development agency Yorkshire Forward, said: "This is great news for Yorkshire and demonstrates the region's ability to attract significant inward investments that will play a vital role towards tackling climate change, in this case advanced biofuels."
