Yorkshire firms' broadband boosted

A super-fast, pay-as-you-go broadband network has been established to allow creative industries in the north of England to streamline their business by sending large files securely at high speed.
The £11.6 million NorthernNet service provides access to high-speed internet of up to 100-megabytes direct to firms' offices or via one of 13 'media access bureaus'.
The Round Foundry Media Centre in Leeds, Sheffield's Electric Works and Grimsby College have all been identified as media access bureaus. A further six sites will open next year.
NorthernNet is part of the Government's 20-year 'Northern Way' initiative which aims to revolutionise the economy in the North and is funded by the region's three regional development agencies (RDAs).
As part of the scheme, £3.4 million has been put into a programme designed to strengthen the sector by encouraging collaboration and innovation.
Stephen Timms, minister for Digital Britain, said: "It's essential for jobs and growth that businesses in the UK have access to high-speed networks, and I very much welcome this kind of cutting-edge venture.
"Access to this single, high-speed digital network will be a huge boost to creative and digital businesses across the north of England and media access bureaus will ensure that as many as possible can profit from it."
